The most competitive Budget Airline routes in Europe

June 2, 2009

The competition between European budget airlines has been fierce for the last several years as the no frills airlines like RyanAir, EasyJet, and bmiBaby have slashed prices with huge promotions (often misleading) to fill seats and gain ridership.  As times have gotten tougher for the airlines from less air travel, it’s interesting to look at the most competitive European Budget Airline routes that are still alive and kicking for the upcoming travel season this summer.

I performed the searches and due dilligence mostly using the Low Cost Airline Guide, a very comprehensive guide to budget airlines in Europe (with some help from Martin the site’s owner).

Through the research, not surprisingly the most popular and competitive airline routes are those from the major [United Kingdom] airports to vacation destinations in Spain. I present my findings below, which are not perfect but should be found interesting nonetheless.

Most Competitive European Airline Routes

United Kingdom to Spain

Manchester (MAN) to Alicante, Spain (ALC): 7 Routes

  1. ThomasCook
  2. EasyJet
  3. Avro Flights
  4. BMI Baby
  5. Flybe.com
  6. Jet2.com
  7. Thomson

Manchester (MAN) to Malaga, Spain (APG): 7 Routes

  1. ThomasCook
  2. EasyJet
  3. Avro Flights
  4. BMI Baby
  5. Flybe.com
  6. Jet2.com
  7. Brussels Airlines

And some more:

  • Manchester to Palma Majorca (PMI): 7 Routes (Same as above)
  • London (all airports) to Palma Majorca (PMI): 8 Routes
  • London to Malaga (AGP): 7 Routes
  • Check out Glasgow, East Midlands, Stansted for some more busy routes to southern Spain.

Other Busy European airline routes (Non-UK)

Besides the United Kingdom, super busy routes  with 5 or more operating airlines originating from other European destinations were hard to come by. Really shows that Brits love their Spanish getaways, as if we didn’t know this already.

  • Berlin (all airports) to Palma Majorca (PMI): 6 Routes
  • Milan all to Ibiza: 6 Routes
  • Istanbul (all airports) to Munich and Cologne: 5 Routes

Competitive European Air Routes Summary

Well, there is no real argument to this post, just a little study or topic that I found amusing and happened to spark my curiousity.  I guess in conclusion, I hope you enjoyed it, and when searching for budget airlines in Europe, it’s best to compare each airline that services that route from the airline’s own website.  Most of the big boys like Expedia and Orbitz, as well as the aggregators like Kayak and Vayama don’t exactly succeed at finding the best budget airlines by themselves for your desired travels, so using sites like Low Cost Airline Guide as a base for your research for cheap airlines.
