If I had a nickel for everyone that asked me how to find the bus station in a random city before they've even left, or was worried about how they were going to get a taxi or find a bathroom.... Your first words about avoiding the noise is crucial. And the other most important advice that I agree with you on is to stay flexible. Prebooking gets so many people into trouble, or at a minimum causes them to significantly overpay. We were once on a 4 day boat trip on a 10-person gullet on the coast of turkey. We booked it two days in advance from the company when we arrived in the town, and paid about $50 per person per day. Another couple booked 3 weeks ahead from home and paid about 8 times as much as we did!
