Pinching Pennies on the Road

With prices at the pump and at the ticket counter getting out of hand, many travelers are resorting to the unthinkable, calling off their trips. That’s too bad, but it has happened from time to time when the economy enters a downturn. Most are content to stow their backpacks and Larium pills and wait for a better time to travel.
For those who say “to hell with in,” and hit the road anyway, here are a few penny pinching tips that might come in handy in scarce times.
Some people are opting to explore nearer to home. I personally know a few folks who are having a vacation by checking into a hotel in their own city. That might be a bit weird, but anything that can get you into that vacation state of mind helps. Simply wandering unfamiliar neighborhoods (best done in daylight, perhaps) or taking in some local culture can be just what the doctor ordered for those bitten by the travel bug.
Renting a car? Don’t do it at the airport. Many airport rental agencies are required to levy an extra charge (sometimes quite significant) for renters. This tax for out of towners can be avoided by taking a taxi into the city and renting there.
Also, frequent car renters should consider AAA. A $70 per year membership gets you access to significant discounts. Sometimes it only takes one rental for the membership to pay for itself.
Consider a package tour. I know that it’s a no-no for independent minded travelers, but many packages are simply the pairing of hotel and airfare at a reasonable price. They do not infringe upon itineraries or free spirited wanderings.
If all else fails, get hold of a Geo Metro, a box of crackers, and a jar of peanut butter and head out to see where the road leads.

Good tips. If I was going to do a super cheap vacation, I would avoid airfare and stick near home, but that's just me. Here in NE you have so many options...
