Ten Growing International Destinations

June 6, 2007

Virtual Tourist made a new list naming the top ten up-and-coming travel destinations. Does Europe, Latin America, or Southeast Asia come out on top of the list?

Virtual Tourist sees these ten destinations as places that could / should see a great increase in travel interest from travelers worldwide. Will they? Sure. One or two may become overdeveloped tourist havens in the next couple decades, but they will be in the minority. I think several of these destinations will grow “healthily” as travel destinations, preserving the qualities that budget backpackers and independent travelers love to see.

So now for the list.. the Ten growing international travel destinations.

  1. Salamanca, Spain
  2. Kotor, Montenegro (pictured above)
  3. Whistler, Canada
  4. Tbilisi, Georgia
  5. Antrim, Northern Ireland
  6. Mendoza, Argentina
  7. Bukhara, Uzbekistan
  8. Lalibela, Ethiopia
  9. Quedlinburg, Germany
  10. Sihanoukville, Cambodia

It’s an interesting list, and it seems as though Europeanish countries are featured most often. I would have expected one or two Latin American countries before seeing the list, but I suppose they aren’t doing much compared to the Europeans in the attempt to attract new travelers. Only one Southeast Asian country in Cambodia seems to be underestimating their travel potential. Overall, it’s a good list though.
Here is the old, original article about the ten growing international travel destinations.

  3. Interesting that Whistler appears 3 on the list. I would have thought that it already does a burgeoning trade with international travellers - perhaps it is due to the upcoming Winter Olympics?
