Romania Travel 1 - Bucharest
By Nick August 22, 2006
Now is the time to visit Romania. Now it is cheap, genuine, and real. As the country enters the EU in 2007, some of these characteristics may diminish. This is my first short entry on Romania covering Bucharest. My next entry about Romania will pertain to its Black Sea Resorts.
Romania’s capital Bucharest is known as a little Paris because of its beautiful boulevards and buildings. In Bucharest, there are plenty of things to do. The top attractions are:
- Palace of Parliament or People’s Palace (Palatul Poporului) - The second largest building in the world. Definitely a must see. Pictured Below.
- Churches - Stavropoleos and Kretzulescu among many others.
- Village Museum (Muzeul Satului) - an outdoor museum with hundreds of historic Romanian buildings. Looks kind of boring though.
- Explore. Be flexible. Walk around.
As for monetary issues, one US dollar is worth $2.73 of Romania’s new Lei currency (they dropped 4 zeros off their old Lei to equal their new Lei.) The current strength of the dollar helps stretch your budget.
Accommodations: the Butterfly Villa Hostel is a good bet for around $12 a night. Another option is Hotel Carpati, which goes for around $20 a night.
Meals: Range from 7-10 US dollars at most menu restaurants.
Languages: Romanian, Hungarian, and German.
So definitely consider traveling to Romania soon. Also, check out my next Romanian travel post on their budget resorts on the Black Sea.
