Hostel Part 2 - Slovakia again

July 14, 2006

Cinematical blogged about the new Hostel being filmed. Hostel part two will be just as gruesome as the first, but is expected to have more twisted turns in it. The story will be about three American girls being led to Slovakia.

The movie will once again be directed by Eli Roth, and will be shot in the Czech Republic, Rome, and maybe Slovakia (if the country allows it.) I think it will be doubtful that any shooting will go on in Slovakia because of Hostel’s negative portrayal of it. I even feel for the people in Slovakia, because it seems like a charming country, but some people will undoubtedly decide not to go to Slovakia just because of the movie.

Hostel movie

Personally, I’m a big fan of scary movies, but I could not watch Hostel. I watched the first hour, then had to shut it off. I like twisted story lines, but not disgusting torture. So I will not be watching Hostel II when it comes out in early next year.

Goodbye Budget Lebanon

July 13, 2006

With the recent Middle East conflict between Israel and Lebanon, it’s starting to look like Lebanon will no longer be an attractive budget travel destination.

Just when it started to seem like Lebanon was starting to revitalize after their past conflicts with Israel, they started to get involved again. Economically, I do not see the point in being a nationalist in Lebanon because of the impact this will have on tourism.

Lebanon’s travel website boasts

Lebanon tourism prospects strong for 2006
Up to 1.6 million visitors projected this year

However, now those prospects are not looking too strong, atleast while they still detain two Israeli soldiers. If you couldn’t tell, I’m not a big fan of any conflicts in the Middle East, because most military action there just gets messy [see US/Iraq war]
Lebanon was a very cheap destination for travelers. Dorm style Beirut hotel rooms could be had for $6 a night, and double or triple rooms would never be more than $20. Full meals at the typical restaurant are usually around $2 or $3.
Baalbeck, LebanonPopular ancient Roman ruins at Baalbeck, Lebanon

The most popular things to do in Lebanon include visiting the ancient Roman ruins at Baalbeck, walking along the Beirut corniche, which is a promenade along the Mediterranean Sea, and visiting the National Museum in Beirut. There are plenty of other things to explore in Beirut and in the rest of Lebanon also.

If you are still interested in traveling to Lebanon while Israel is slinging missles at Beirut’s airport, airbases, and the southern part of the country, I’m sure there are many great deals available since most of the Western world will be avoiding the area for awhile.

“WWOOF”ing - sweat paying for accommodations

July 13, 2006

WWOOF’ing is a new travel idea that I just ran across recently. It allows travelers to obtain free accommodations, and also food sometimes, in thousands of destinations accross the world. No, this isn’t a scam, because you do pay for your stay in ways other than the local currency.

WWOOF stands for World Wide Oppurtunities on Organic Farms or Willing Workers on Organic Farms. The name is pretty self explanatory, but in a short description, travelers are expected to work in exchange for room and board.

WWOOF.org is the official site online for people who may be interested. They have links to 24 national WWOOFing organizations, and to independent hosts in 50 other countries. The national WWOOFing organizations require its members to pay a membership fee, but the independent hosts do not.

WWOOF New Zealand

A picture of a WWOOF farm in New Zealand, from WWOOOF New Zealand

After browsing through several of the farms listed independently, I found that most places require their workers to work anywhere from 4 to 8 hours, 5 days a week, in exchange for a room. Other activities on site may include yoga and other reflection type stuff.

WWOOFing is definitely an interesting idea to save money while traveling, however I think that someone who would enjoy this would be required to have a passion for the spiritual, pure, organic lifestlye. Another potential negative is that the time commitment to the farm would damper your ability to explore the sites and cities your destination has to offer.

So although free accommodations may be a tempting offer, I don’t think working only for the monetary savings is a good idea. Someone that would enjoy this working vacation needs to have a passion for this type of lifestyle.

European Hostels Trump US Hostels

July 12, 2006

I just found a news story dealing with hostels, and it seemed pretty interesting. It’s a CNN article titled ” U.S. hostels struggle to live up to European counterparts

It points out the many reasons why US hostels are not successful and desirable like European hostels. One being that Europe has a better public transportation system, so travelers can travel to almost anywhere from one city; where in the US, public transportation is a lot harder to find. It points out that there is not even a train connection between Houston and Dallas.

Another reason US hostels are not very popular is because of the choices available to travelers. If you are anywhere other than New York City or LA, the choices of hostels are usually limited, if there are any at all.
Personally, I love the concept of hostels, but I do not see them thriving in the US any time soon. The US is too big, has too little, affordable, public transportion, and doesn’t seem to have the old world charm that Europe has to offer its travelers. So I wouldn’t expect backpacking through America to become popular in the near future.

Why Budget Globe Trotting

July 12, 2006

Now I think I’ll elaborate on why I chose to blog about budget traveling around the world instead of a different subject that I may be interested in.
Traveling hasn’t always been a huge passion of mine until about a year ago. I took Spanish III at my highschool, and my teacher wanted to take us on a trip to a Spanish speaking country. So after consideration, my parents thought it was a good idea for me to go.

So we ended up taking an 8 day group tour throughout Spain with EF Tours. The tour was titled “Madrid and the Sun Coast.” It was fairly spendy, but my parents agreed to split the bill with me.

Madrid and the Sun Coast

The route we took on our EF Tour: Madrid, Cordoba, Seville, Benemaldena, Morrocco, Granada, Toledo, and Madrid

I really enjoyed the tour and the oppurtunity to experience the culture. The EF tour was a lot more flexible than I excpected, so I was able to wander off on my own for several hours each day. My free time each day was the highlight of the tour for me, because I was able to meet alot of new people from all over Europe.

At this point, I decided I’m interested in traveling alot more. But one difference now is that my parents are no longer willing to foot the bill, and that leads me to my blog right now, looking for budget travel ideas that will allow me to become a globe trotter.

About BudgetGlobeTrotting.com

July 11, 2006

BudgetGlobeTrotting.com is a new blog focused on how to travel throughout the world on a shoe string budget. I’m going to attempt to write articles covering all things dealing with budget travel, from trips to tips that my audience may be interested in.

So why am I making the blog? Well, half of it is that I really have nothing better to do, and the other half is that I’m looking for future budget travel ideas that I can use for myself.

So who am I? My name is Nick, and I’m just an 18 year old student from the Midwest. I plan on attending a university, only if I do not take a gap year first to travel around. So really, I’m just a regular kid who is interested in traveling abroad and into web development and publishing.

I hope you come to enjoy my blog. Peace.
